What is PCIT?

Who Can PCIT Help?

PCIT can be helpful for children who struggle with:

  • Big emotional reactions

  • Frequent tantrums

  • Difficulty following directions

  • Aggression or oppositional behaviors

  • Emotional regulation

  • Anxiety or trauma-related behaviors

  • Challenges within the parent-child relationship

‍ ‍What Changes Do Parents Often Notice with PCIT?

Over time, parents often experience:

  • More confidence in their parenting decisions

  • Less stress during challenging moments

  • Stronger connection with their child

  • A better understanding of what their child needs

  • More calm and consistency at home

  • A child who feels safer expressing emotions

Of course, there’s no such thing as a perfect child. Rather, the goal is a stronger relationship where both you and your child have the skills to handle life’s challenges together.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is an evidence-based program with decades of research supporting its effectiveness.

Unlike traditional therapy where the child may spend most of the session alone, PCIT involves the parent and child working together throughout the majority of the program.

The goal is to strengthen the parent-child relationship while helping parents learn practical skills for navigating challenging behaviors.

Through live parent coaching, you learn how to:

  • Increase connection and attachment

  • Respond to your child’s emotions with confidence

  • Create more positive interactions

  • Set clear and consistent boundaries

  • Support your child’s emotional regulation

You become the person who has the greatest influence on your child’s growth.

How we can work together

At Mighty Oaks, Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is delivered in a structured 14-week parent coaching program.

(Sessions may be added or subtracted based on need.)

We begin by meeting together to understand your goals, your child’s needs, and what you hope will change. We’ll talk through your family dynamics and create a plan for moving forward.

After the initial sessions, much of the work happens in your home environment through secure video sessions.

This allows you to practice skills where they matter most: in real-life moments with your child.

During coaching sessions, you will receive guidance in the moment while interacting with your child. You’ll wear a small earpiece so I can support and coach you while your child experiences a natural interaction with you.

In real time, you’ll learn how to understand your child differently and respond in ways that build security and connection.

The Two Parts of PCIT:

Child-Led Connection

The first part of PCIT focuses on strengthening your relationship with your child. You’ll learn how to follow your child’s lead, become more attuned to their emotions, and create moments where your child feels deeply seen and understood.

Many children need more than love. They need consistent experiences of being noticed, understood, and emotionally supported. This part helps build a stronger foundation of safety and connection.

Parent-Led Guidance

The second part focuses on helping parents provide clear direction while maintaining connection.

You’ll learn how to set limits, give effective guidance, and respond to challenging behaviors in a way that is calm, consistent, and supportive. The goal is a relationship where your child feels both connected and supported by healthy boundaries.
